Producer Role

James Wilton Dance (JWD) are a multi award winning dance company with a dual base in Cornwall and Brighton. The company is run by choreographer James Wilton and performer Sarah Jane Taylor.


After 10 years of creating and touring works JWD have established themselves as one of the U.K’s premier touring companies, averaging over 50 performances per year both nationally and internationally as well as delivering over 100 days of education work per year. Thus far, Wilton and Taylor have done all tour/workshop booking, marketing, social media, producing and funding bid writing themselves.


The company are now looking to prepare for growth over the coming years, and are looking to recruit someone with a background in producing/arts management/CEO of an arts organisation.


The person recruited will be responsible for the following in collaboration with Wilton and Taylor:


1. Assessing JWDs legal structure and determining the best course of action. Wilton is currently the sole director of a limited company. The person appointed will examine which structure (Charity, CIC) is the best fit for the future of the company, particularly with the companies ambitions to become and Arts Council NPO.


2. Exploring possibilities and making funding applications for local authority, charitable funding and commercial sponsorship to widen JWDs income pool and grow financial resilience.


3. Establishing relationships with international festivals and larger scale UK Theatres. JWD have aspirations to expanding international touring routes and touring to the largest theatres in the UK, therefore it is important to begin brokering relationships with these venues and festivals.


The contract offered is for 10 weeks of work, divided into 20 half weeks. A total fee of £10,000 is available.

About JWD


James Wilton Dance (JWD) were founded in 2010. The company have won awards at the Bern, Hannover and MASDANZA International Choreography competitions and the Sadler’s Wells Global Dance Contest. 

James’ first full evening work Last Man Standing (2014) was performed 78 times and won an award at the Bern Tanzprize in Switzerland.

Works LEVIATHAN (2016) and The Storm (2018) achieved unprecedented success in touring, achieving close to 200 performances between them, including sold out runs at Edinburgh Fringe Festival, performances in Germany, Gibraltar, Austria, Peru, Spain, Poland and Sweden. LEVIATHAN was nominated for best dance production at the Manchester Theatre Awards and was part of the Rural Touring for Dance Initiative 2017/18/19.


James has created works for Scottish Dance Theatre, Konzert Theater Bern, Theater Münster, Opera Graz, Ballet Hagen and dance company Giessen and has choreographed a work for 50 professional dancers for performances at Millennium and Wembley Stadiums (reaching over 110,000 people in the process). 


JWD plans for the next 2-3 years:


  • Creation of duet The Four Seasons, touring in 2021/22/23.

  • Continued touring of existing works The Storm and LEVIATHAN in 2021.

  • Creation of dance film Adam, Eve, Apple in collaboration with film maker Dan Martin.

  • Expansion of digital class programme.

  • Application to become an ACE National Portfolio Organisation at the next round.
